Shine Your Light: Thee Sacred Souls Interviewed In the five years since they formed in San Diego, @theesacredsouls - Josh Lane, Alex Garcia and Sal Samano - have embarked on a journey from dive bars to auditoriums, with their unique combination of synergetic craftsmanship and deep soul grooves. Originating in and around tiny venues in Southern California in 2019, they emerged on the other side of the pandemic with a fully-formed debut album that quickly established them globally. Recorded earlier this year at Daptone label boss Gabriel Roth’s Penrose Studios in California, their new album ‘Got A Story To Tell’ had largely been written on tour by Alex and Sal, with Josh adding words and vocals later. The warmth of the straight to eight track analog recording is constant, but the songs are an upgrade on their debut set, with more depth and variety added in for good measure. In conversation with CLASH, the buzzy trio muse on their process, honouring the Daptone legacy and finding a balance between the demands of touring and studio downtime. Barry Can’t Swim On His Breakout Year, Working With Heineken, And His Second Album @barrycantswim has become one of electronic music’s defining breakout stories this year. Real name Joshua Mainnie, the producer’s intoxicating introductory EPs infused house, disco, and beyond with analogue aspects, at times touching on a jazz-like dexterity. A few weeks back, the Scottish producer helped open @amsterdamdanceevent at the Loft, and he decided to team up with @heineken for something a bit different. Working closely with the brand, they enacted a special policy where a message would flash up on fans’ phones, asking them to wave their hands in the air – and not their mobile. A playful twist on the no-phones-on-the-dancefloor policy, it sought to allow the audience a chance to live in the moment, becoming the talk of the festival in the process. It’s part of an ongoing digital detox from Heineken, who recently the Boring Mode app, aiming to trim out the digital world’s excess to reveal the truly meaningful aspects of our daily lives.
